Blessed to Be a Blessing: Our 2019 Mission Trip families in Need

Our adult mission team—Kent, Barbara, Sara, Brenda, and Libo—embarked on a journey with a simple yet powerful purpose: to bless families living in poverty.  Partnering with Greivin’s father, a retired pastor who helped identify families most in need, we prepared for a meaningful outreach in Costa Rica.  We interviewed each family, recording details about each member, including clothing sizes and specific needs, to ensure the gifts would be meaningful and personal.

In the weeks leading up to the trip, we hosted two fundraising dinners—one at Valley Church and another at the Legion in North Vancouver. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we raised over $5,000. With those funds, we shopped for clothing, gifts, and essentials, packing ten large suitcases full of treasures tailored to each family’s needs. Once in Costa Rica, we visited each family individually—delivering the gifts, praying with them, and listening to their stories. These moments were sacred. We didn’t just bring physical items; we shared love, presence, and hope. We also visited a local seniors’ home with small gifts and warm conversations, reminding the residents they are seen and valued.

Throughout our trip, we were welcomed into several churches, where we had the opportunity to share our testimonies and encourage local believers. But one of the greatest highlights was the joyful school celebration we helped organize—a full day of fun and festivities for the children. With bouncy castles and inflatable slides, popcorn, cotton candy, delicious food, cake and ice cream, the day was bursting with laughter and excitement. Each child received a backpack filled with school supplies, setting them up for a strong start to their academic year.

We ended our mission with a dinner gathering for all the volunteers, where we shared communion, prayed together, and reflected on how deeply we had each been impacted. Living among these families, hearing their stories, and witnessing their resilience and faith left a permanent mark on our hearts.

This mission trip wasn’t just about giving—it was about connection, transformation, and seeing God’s love in action. We came to bless, and in doing so, were blessed beyond measure.
